News of Southwest's future:
Sadly but not surprisingly, the
school's final graduation and closing has occurred (again). The
last school day was May 17, 2016, and the future remains in limbo.

Southwest "FOR LEASE" in 1998
(below). Again in 2019?
Photo taken in the summer of 1998 during
Southwest's 2-year closing of 1998-2000 when the School District
was seriously considering the closing as forever permanent. However,
it was re-opened in the fall of 2000 as the public Southwest
Charter School, then later restored to Southwest H.S. (non-charter)
until being closed again in 2016. The above pictured phone number
was to the District office in charge of selling or leasing unused
school properties. UMKC and neighboring St. Andrew's Church (with
conversion to a parochial school in mind) expressed interest,
as well as several unidentified real estate investment firms,
but nothing developed. (Photo from Jim Ismert, SW Class of '75) |
